A Pre-Season Cutter Bar Maintenance Checklist

Inspect guard fingers for bend or wear before the season starts — a single deformed finger can throw off how cleanly the sickle shears through a stalk.
Check sickle sharpness and replace sections showing rounded edges rather than waiting for visible cutting trouble in the field.
Grease the drive linkage points according to the service interval in your operator manual, especially after storage over the off-season.
Examine the reflective safety striping on the header — beyond visibility, a damaged strip is often the first visible sign of a minor frame impact worth inspecting further.
Run the unit empty for two to three minutes before entering the field to confirm smooth sickle travel and listen for any irregular drivetrain noise.
